Equipment Needed:

  • Pour-over dripper (like a Hario V60 or Chemex)
  • Coffee scale (with a timer)
  • Gooseneck kettle (for controlled pouring)
  • Freshly roasted Bump 'n Grind specialty Conscientious coffee (whole beans)
  • Coffee grinder (burr grinder recommended)
  • Filtered water (ideally heated to 200°F / 93°C)
  • Coffee filter (paper, fabric or metal, depending on your dripper)

Ingredients:

  • Coffee: Use about 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio. For example, 20 grams of coffee for 300 grams of water.

Steps:

  1. Measure and Grind the Coffee:

    • Weigh out your coffee beans. Use a burr grinder to grind the beans to a medium-fine consistency, similar to table salt.
  2. Prepare the Dripper:

    • Place your dripper on a mug or carafe.
    • Rinse the filter with hot water to remove any paper taste and preheat the dripper. Discard the rinse water.
  3. Add Coffee:

    • Place the ground coffee in the filter. Level it out for even extraction.
  4. Bloom:

    • Start your timer and pour about twice the weight of the coffee in water (e.g., 40 grams for 20 grams of coffee) in a circular motion to saturate the grounds.
    • Let it bloom for about 30 seconds. This allows gases to escape, enhancing flavor.
  5. Pouring:

    • After blooming, pour the remaining water slowly and steadily in a circular motion, avoiding the edges of the filter.
    • Pour in stages (e.g., 100 grams, wait for it to drain, then 100 grams more) until you reach your target weight.
  6. Final Drip:

    • Allow the coffee to finish dripping through the filter. This usually takes about 3-4 minutes total brew time.
  7. Serve:

    • Remove the dripper, and enjoy your freshly brewed coffee! You can taste for sweetness, acidity, and body, adjusting your grind or pour technique in future brews as needed.

Tips:

  • Experiment with different beans and grind sizes to find what suits your taste best.
  • Ensure water quality is good; filtered water enhances flavor.
  • Maintain consistent pouring for even extraction.

Enjoy your perfectly crafted cup of pour-over coffee!
